|Ch4 Classic Course-Winter Dietary Supplementation

冬季的第一個節氣-「立冬」,作物幾乎收成,動物們也躲起來,準備進入冬眠的狀態了。很多動物會在秋末開始進食,然後躲進自己挖的洞裡,開始冬眠。冬天氣溫寒冷、食物匱乏,所以牠們大睡,睡了整個冬天,等春天的到來,才會慢慢甦醒,開始活動。古人觀象有云「立冬萬物地下藏」,入冬天氣變冷,而地底的溫度卻顯得溫暖。植物為了度過寒冷的冬季,會將營養集中並往下儲藏,存放在地底或水裡的根莖裡,於是這些植物的根莖特別膨大,例如蘿蔔、芋頭、蓮藕等。因為天氣的關係,冬天裡,地上的蔬果種類不多,然而在看不見的地底下,蔬果的生長可是非常熱鬧豐富喔!

The first solar term in Winter is ‘the beginning of Winter’. In this time of the year, people harvest crops and animals go to hibernate. Many animals eat a large amount of food at the end of Fall and hide in the caves to get through the cold Winter. Therefore, it is cold on the surface of ground but warm underneath. Likewise, plants like Chinese radish, taros, and lotus roots, store water and nutrition. As a result, they grow large roots underground. Due to the cold weather, you might not be able to see them on the surface, but the lively growth underground is going on vigorously.

食在當令
Seasonal Diet

走訪一趟傳統市場,會在市場裡看見節氣。在道禾,我們會將四季的蔬果佈置在大書房的節氣桌,宛如市場裡的一個小小菜攤。今天課程的開始,老師請孩子挑選節氣桌上自己喜歡的蔬果,回到教室,我們先品嚐了花生、菱角。而剝花生、剝菱角的動作,很自然地協助孩子練習了手部小肌肉,老師發給每個孩子各三個花生,孩子在過程中發現:雖然每個人拿到的都是「三個」花生,但是因為裡面的花生仁數量各有不同,便引發孩子一邊吃著花生,一邊數數,彷彿在進行著數學的學習活動呢!最後,孩子動手將自己剛剛所選的食材切成小塊,並小心翼翼地放進湯鍋中,大家將手中的食材分享放入,並且共同為一鍋湯努力著,像是煮石頭湯一樣熱鬧。孩子們非常期待這鍋從挑選食材開始參與的菜湯,用著當令的蔬菜煮出來的湯,孩子們都好奇:會是怎樣的味道呢?午睡起來後,教室已經飄出陣陣的香氣,今天孩子不賴床,說是要趕快起床看看自己煮的湯變成什麼樣子?

You get to sense the solar terms when you pay traditional markets a visit. Here at Daohe, we decorated our solar-term table in the Grand Study with seasonal fruits and vegetables. The table looked like a green vendor’s stall at the market. In the solar-term class today, we first tasted some peanuts and water chestnuts. The peeling movements helped train our children’s little muscles. They also learned how to count when eating peanuts. Later, everyone helped chop the ingredients and put them into a big pot. After engaging in every step of making the soup, our children could not wait to know what the soup would taste like. After nap time, they immediately checked on their soup without delay.

「立冬」這個節氣,在傳統上,人們家裡會煲上一鍋補湯,補補身子,為著入冬做準備。在道禾,我們用當令蔬果,為孩子熬上一碗天人一氣的熱湯,在涼涼的天氣裡,喝下暖暖的一口,心裡也跟著暖和起來。

In the Beginning of Winter, people follow the tradition of cooking a pot of soup for the sake of dietary supplementation. By so doing, they can stay healthy and get ready to enter Winter. Here at Daohe, we use seasonal vegetables to make soup for our children. The hot soup warms everyone up on these cool days at the Beginning of Winter.

That is How We Say it in English

下午,Tr. Ebra向孩子們介紹,這些蔬果英文怎麼說,例如薑ginger、蓮藕lotus root、菱角water chestnut、花生peanut、地瓜sweet potato、馬鈴薯potato,並且透過這些食材,帶領孩子認識:顏色、形狀等。接著,老師帶著孩子玩有趣的遊戲,請孩子在心中選一個今天有出現的食材,並且低聲地用英文說法在老師耳邊說,然後將這個食材畫在黑板上,讓其他孩子們猜猜。最後,老師有個特別的發現,這個班級,有大部分的孩子,印象最深刻的是「蓮藕」。

In the English class that day, Tr. Ebra introduced the vegetables in English to our children to build the knowledge cycle. Our children learned the English pronunciations for ginger, lotus root, water chestnut, peanut, sweet potato, and potato. After teaching them the English names, Tr. Ebra taught our children the colors and the shapes of these vegetables. Then the whole class played ‘Whispering Game’. One child whispered the name of the vegetable to Tr. Ebra and later drew it on the blackboard. The rest of the class then tried to guess what vegetable it was. At the end of the game, Tr. Ebra found out that ‘locus root’ fascinated our children the most.

蔬果玩藝術
Vegetables & Arts

今天的課程,我們刻意留下了食材些許:馬鈴薯、蘿蔔、地瓜和蓮藕。藝術老師利用這些素材,帶著孩子進行藝術創作,課程的原初設定,是讓孩子利用這些蔬果的切面來蓋印,不過,孩子們最終對於今天老師在黑板上的蔬果圖像印記最深刻,絕大部分的孩子們,畫的是其心中的菜園,過程中,會看見有的孩子倆倆合作,你畫根莖我畫葉,從一同烹煮煲湯,到這個階段的藝術創作,孩子鮮少爭吵,共用一張紙的身體碰觸,卻昇華為美麗彼此適配,取代了過往的衝突,孩子會互相禮讓,並透過水彩、蓋印、粉臘筆等創作素材,孩子心中的冬天菜園就此誕生。

In the art class today, we used the vegetables and implement art activity for our children. The original idea was to have our children used the chopped vegetables as stamps. Interestingly, we found out that the picture of big vegetables drawn on the blackboard impressed our children most. Later, our children drew their ideal garden. From cooking soup to creating artwork, they learned from each other through their collaborative work. They seldom raised up their voice or got into a fight. At the end of the day, they all created their dream garden in this Winter Wonderland.

課程中我的看見
What I saw in this Course

期待自己在進行課程設計時,能涵蓋完整而豐富的學習活動,並且,在教學活動進行的背後,有教師個人想帶給孩子的核心價值。以今天的立冬進補為例,我們不是在教會孩子煮好一鍋湯的能力,在合力烹煮的過程中,希望孩子看見他人,看見自己,終能看見群體中的自我。你做著,我看著,我學著;而我做著的時候,你也會看著、學著。這鍋湯的熬煮,對孩子來說是期待,更是等待。

It is our hope to design courses that cover complete and diverse learning activities. Most importantly, teachers can share their values with our children through these activities. Take today’s Winter Dietary Supplementation course for example, we did not intend to teach our children simply how to cook a pot of soup. On the contrary, we expect our children to learn how to sense their ‘self’, see others, and work together. The process of making the soup is the mixture of their anticipation and their ability to take turns and wait.

教學設計中,以孩子為主體來構想,孩子們有著許多的「想要」與「發表討論」,教師試著結合各項元素,跨領域進行統整教學,讓孩子在做中學,過程中體驗藝術創作,使用數學於遊戲、生活終而不自知,我想這就是這堂課,我所傳達的。

To sum up, this course is designed with our children and for our children. Their eagerness to learn and willingness to speak up enrich this course. As teachers, we try to incorporate different elements and conduct integrated cross-disciplinary teaching so that we can create an environment for ‘learning by doing’. In this course, our children experienced arts through creating and applied math through playing games. Ultimately, we all learn unintentionally and understand how to live consciously. That is what I intend to convey through this Winter Dietary Supplementation course.
